Queen Sono will be Netflix's first African original series

NETFLIX ORIGINAL: The streaming service is expanding its offering of African series

NETFLIX IS adding to its original programming offering with its first African original series.

Drama Queen Sono follows the story of a South African secret agent who is tasked with fighting crime but outside of work is also battling with challenges in her personal life.

Queen Sono is set to be available to stream on Netflix globally from next year.

South African actress Pearl Thusi, who is set to star in the series, said: “It’s going to change the game for every artist on this continent, I believe.”

“The team that I’ve been working with has worked so hard to make this happen. Thank you to Netflix for believing in this idea. I cannot wait for every young woman, every woman on this continent, and actually, on this planet to meet Queen Sono.”

Erik Barmack, Netflix’s vice president of international originals, recently spoke in London about the streaming service’s plans for commissioning original series in Africa in the new year.

“Taking talent like this and telling stories to the rest of the world puts Pearl in the same category as other strong female characters like Claire Underwood in ‘House of Cards’ and Jessica Jones,” Variety reported he said.
