R Kelly’s daughter: "I have been deeply affected"

CONDEMNED: R Kelly's daughter has described him as a monster

R KELLY’S daughter has condemned her father’s actions and shared a message of support for his alleged victims.

Joann Kelly, who goes by the name Buku Abi, published her comments on her estranged father’s conduct and the accusations against him on social media.

She had been subjected to criticism for not speaking out on the situation in the wake of the airing of Surviving R Kelly, a lifetime documentary about allegations of abuse, paedophile and sexual misconduct made against the singer.

She wrote: “To all the people the people that feel I should be speaking up/against everything that is going on right now, I just want you all to understand that devastated is an understatement for all that I feel currently.”

Abi extended her support and solidarity to the alleged victims and addressed why she had not spoken out sooner.

“I pray for all the families and [women] who have been affected by my father’s actions. Trust, I have been deeply affected by all of this,” she said.

The 20-year-old added: “My choice to not speak on him and what he does is form my peace of mind. My emotional state and for my healing.”

She said that she does not have a relationship with her father, who she referred to as a “monster”, having not spoken to him in years.

Abi, who is also a singer, said it took her almost three days to compose the message, which she posted on her Instagram page, as she was struggled to find the right words and process what was happening.

A reluctance to deal with personal issues via social media had prevented her from going public sooner.

Abi thanked those who had contacted her and her family to send messages of love and support for helping “push us through this hard time”.

Her statement comes after Lady Gaga apologised for working with the singer in 2013 and vowed to have their duet Do What U Want (With My Body) removed from streaming platforms.

Gaga said: “What I am hearing about the allegations against R Kelly is absolutely horrifying and indefensible.

“I can’t go back, but I can go forward and continue to support women, men, and people of all sexual identities, and of all races, who are victims of sexual assault.”

R Kelly has repeatedly denied the allegations against him.
