Reflecting on the Black Girl Magic at the Royal Wedding

BLACK BEAUTY: Serena Williams

MOTHER OF the bride Doria Ragland attended her daughter’s big day wearing a stunning outfit designed by Oscar de la Renta. The mint green dress and matching jacket were stylishly embroidered with white floral detail seen along the hem. As for her makeup, Ragland followed suit with daughter Meghan as she kept her look soft and simple.

Wedding attendee Serena Williams showed off her fashion statement journey with a whole wardrobe change for the reception. The initial look saw Williams glow in a fitted, blush pink Versace dress that was styled elegantly with a matching headdress on long braids.

For the reception, she swapped the knee length look with a gloriously long gown from Valentino’s Fall 2018 collection. Tucked away under her dress, Williams was sporting a pair of trainers to the after party where she shared with her Instagram fans "Little known fact: I often wear sneakers under my evening gown.”

Up next on the best-dressed list was Oprah Winfrey who attended the wedding wearing a sophisticated baby pink dress. Having a near wardrobe malfunction, Winfrey took to Instagram to thank the Stella McCartney’s team for a last minute dress change. It was reported that the team was, “working all night long to get the dress finished.”

According to Oprah’s caption, she didn’t realise that her original beige dress would photograph too “white” for a wedding which forced her to think quickly on her toes for a plan B. She wore the dress with an elaborate hat by designer Philip Treacy.

Friend and former Suits colleague Gina Torres graced the royal wedding wearing a stunning red lace dress. The floral patterns were detailed with a sheer plunge panel, which fell towards her cleavage. The actress teamed the look with a pale nude hat, clutch and pointed stilettos.

The majestic sounds of The Kingdom Choir saw black women shine in all their glory. The group made up of 20 singers, both male and female struck a chord with millions of viewers with their perfectly performed rendition of ‘Stand by Me’. Many of the black women, who sung so gracefully, wore soft and elegant colours, ranging from whites, soft pinks and baby blues.
