Rio to call time on career at end of season

QUEENS PARK Rangers centre-back Rio Ferdinand has suggested this will be his last season as a professional after comments emerged from a pre-recorded TV interview.

The 35-year-old former England defender made the retirement revelation during an interview on the Jonathan Ross show that will be screened tomorrow evening (Oct 25).

The ex-Manchester United player, who was at one point the most expensive defender in the world when United signed him from Leeds, told the programme he held no fears of retiring.

He said he would “probably” retire and added: “You get to a time where you start understanding your body and the strains playing football [is] putting your body through, going out and training every day.”

Ferdinand is set to undergo a tough season with QPR as the west Londoners struggle for results, while many expect them to immediately go back down after winning promotion from the Championship last season.
