Serena Williams gets revenge to win WTA Finals

AMERICAN QUEEN of the court Serena Williams got revenge in emphatic fashion to win the WTA Finals in Singapore against the same opponent who thrashed her in the earlier group stages.

The world number one dismissed Romania’s Simona Halep 6-3 6-0 in the final to claim the title for the fifth time.

After losing to Halep 6-0 6-2 in the group stages, Williams was out for blood and the 33-year-old did not disappoint with a performance that was the exact opposite of her previous embarrassing outing against the Romanian.

The 18-time Grand Slam champion will now end the year as the world’s best ranked player and Williams was naturally pleased with her victory in the Far East.

She said: “I had to play more Serena-style tennis and just do what I do best.

“I was expecting a much better player than I was in the earlier round. Being ready for that really was able to help me out.”

Williams made the final after an entertaining semi-final against Caroline Wozniacki, but the title-sealing win did not reach the heights of that encounter.

The American started with some nerves, but put herself in control once she broke back to prevent Halep moving ahead with a 3-1 lead in the first set.
