Shaun Bailey calls out Sadiq Khan: "Show leadership"

VOCAL: Shaun Bailey

LONDON MAYOR candidate Shaun Bailey has called out Sadiq Khan over the rise of knife crime in London.

It was announced today (Nov 6), that a 16-year-old boy was stabbed to death in the capital, making this the fifth fatal stabbing in six days.

Bailey appeared on BBC Newsnight where he called on Khan to stop blaming Government cuts for the increase in youth violence.

He said: “What I regret is that we are at a point now where people are saying that we can wait 10 years for changes.

“The Mayor took £38million out of the police staffing budget. Those are the kinds of things we need to focus on to make things change.

“We will get no change for any community in London, no matter where you live, if we do not focus on the material things that the Mayor can do.”

Bailey added: “He has to show leadership and stop saying it is about cuts, he has the money in his budget to make things different in London.”

Khan recently said in an interview that it would take a decade to solve knife crime in London. “To really make significant progress can take up to 10 years, a generation,” he said. “They saw in Scotland what we are seeing in London, which is children in primary schools thinking not only is it OK to carry a knife.

“It gives them a sense of belonging in joining a criminal gang and it makes them feel safer and they see nothing wrong in getting involved in this sort of behaviour.”

In this year alone, there have been 250 knife crime victims this year, the most recent being the 16-year-old boy stabbed in Tulse Hill on Monday (Oct 5).
