Shortlist named for Sports Personality of the Year

GOLDEN GIRL: Adams displays her Olympic gold medal

THE SHORTLIST for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY) has been revealed with 11 of the 12 British nominees coming from Olympic and Paralympic competitors.

A panel made up of BBC chiefs, newspaper editors, the chair of UK Sport and three former SPOTY nominees decided on the shortlist.

A ceremony to name the winner for SPOTY will take place at the ExCel Arena in London on December 16.

Olympic double gold medallist Mo Farah is included.

The 29-year-old long distance won gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games in the 5,000m and 10,000m at the Olympic Stadium.

Farah also defended his 5,000m title at the European Championships in June.

Fellow athlete Jessica Ennis joins Farah on the shortlist.

Ennis had a solid start to the season, claiming a silver medal in the pentathlon at the World Indoor Championships in March.

The 26-year-old from Sheffield then broke Denise Lewis’ 12-year heptathlon record in May at the annual meeting in Gotzis, Austria.

Over two days at London 2012 during the summer, Ennis set personal bests in the 200m, javelin and a British record of 12.54 seconds in the 100m hurdles, to not only extend her national record of 6,955 points but to also take Olympic gold.

At the ExCel Arena at London 2012, Nicola Adams became the first woman in history to win an Olympic gold boxing medal, winning three bouts in total.

The 30-year-old from Leeds captured gold in the flyweight division after defeating China’s Ren Cancan in the final 16-7.

Cancan had previously outpointed Adams in the final of World Championships in May, earning Adams a silver medal.
