Show me the money! Hamilton set to sign mega deal

IN DEMAND: Lewis Hamilton

FOUR TIME Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton is on the verge of signing a new 40 million-per-year deal with employers Mercedes.

Hamilton’s long-running contract saga could be concluded before Sunday’s (Jul 8) British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

The Briton, 33, is in the final year of his Mercedes deal, but after months of negotiations the extension – which will rubber-stamp his future with Mercedes for at least another two seasons – is on the brink of being announced.

In what could be his last contract in Formula One, Hamilton is poised to earn megabucks to cement his status as this country’s biggest sporting earner.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said recently: “We don’t want to drag it out much longer. I expect it to be done very, very soon. Maybe it is about choosing the right moment.”

Hamilton, meanwhile, is still in the hunt for the championship after his impressive victory in the recent France Grand Prix.

Hamilton and Mercedes have proved to be a winnng team on and off the track with endorsements of their brands amounting to telephone-like figures.

Another championship success come November will mean that the cash registers continue to chime.
The championship pendulum has swung back and forth between Mercedes and Ferrari.

Hamilton is just one point behind Sebastian Vettel in the drivers’ standings despite failing to nish in Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix.

Of the battle between Hamilton and Vettel - both eye a fth title - Wolff added: “It can swing so quickly. I don’t expect this result will change much. That is going to be the story of the season.”
