Sir Garfield Sobers talks cricket and World Travel Market

PROMOTING BARBADOS: Sir Garfield Sobers has been working with Barbados Tourist Board for almost 40 years

ATTENDANCE AT the World Travel Market (WTM) is nothing new to former Barbadian and West Indies cricketer Sir Garfield Sobers.
The cricketing legend - immortalised in song by Calypsonian The Mighty Sparrow as “the greatest cricketer on Earth or Mars” – has been working with Barbados Tourist Board for almost 40 years and as such, forms part of the contingent which travels to London annually to participate in the travel exhibition.

Sir Gary, as he is affectionately called, shared his views on the event.
“I think it’s a great event. It’s something that promotes the countries and you get an opportunity to meet people and widen your knowledge about other places.”

He described his role during the WTM as one where he gets “to talk about Barbados and in some cases, about cricket”.

“I am often interviewed about how England is expected to do against the West Indies,” he said, “or why certain national sides might be doing well or falling by the wayside”.

Asked what he would do to remedy any decline in the game, the Barbadian national hero said: “I don’t know about other people, but in any sport where there are two or more players, I play for both or for the team. I don’t know if others see it the way I do. When I’m playing for my country, then I’m playing for my country. When I play golf, then it’s me alone.”
