WEIGHTLIFTER ZOE Smith totalled 211kg at the ExCel, breaking an eight-year British record in the process.

Making her Olympic debut in front of a home a crowd, the 18-year-old lifted 90kg in the snatch but failed at her two attempts at 93kg.

But the Greenwich, south London, competitor recovered in the clean and jerk element as she hoisted 121kg, which broke Michaela Breeze’s 120kg national record set in 2004.

A 2010 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, Smith finished second in Group B, which was contested by eight lifters

Another 11 lifters will be in action later today (July 30) and are expected to better Smith’s efforts.
