The 'smoothie' way to boost your immune system

THE IMMUNE system is responsible for the body’s defence system, helping to fight infections, viruses, and bacteria that could potentially enter the body. The stronger your immune system is, the less chance you have of getting sick and the quicker your recovery time is.

A diet rich in fruit and vegetables with immune-boosting antioxidants and vitamins will help you achieve a healthy immune system with all-natural, plant-powered ingredients.

By adding a smoothie or green juice to your diet daily, you could drink your way to a stronger immune system just by indulging in some fruit and veg loaded drinks.

If you’re feeling a bit under the weather, try this green smoothie to help nurse yourself back to health.

Beetroots are full of antioxidants like vitamin C, which can help boost your immune system.

Flaxseed oil contains both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These fatty acids are important for brain function and heart health.

22 cups green cabbage
1 cup water
2 oranges, peeled 2 cups chopped pineapple
1⁄4 cup peeled and cubed beetroot Juice of half a lemon 2 tbsp flaxseed oil

1. Blend the cabbage, water, and oranges until smooth.
2. Add the pineapple, beet, lemon juice, and flaxseed oil and blend again.


Watermelon and mint are a powerful super healing combo, and taste great in a smoothie. Watermelon contains the powerful antioxidant lycopene, that can protect against degenerative diseases and help cells function better.

Mint contains menthol, which is a natural decongestant that helps break up phlegm and mucus. Juice this up when you are feeling under the weather or need to clear your sinuses.

2 cups Swiss chard, stems removed
1⁄4 cup fresh mint, stems removed
2 cups chopped watermelon 2 cups chopped mango
Juice of half a lime

1. Blend the chard, mint, and watermelon until smooth.
2. Add the mango and lime juice and blend again.


With party season on its way, you’ll need to strengthen your immune system. Say hello to the tastiest, healthiest hangover cure. One cup of pineapple will provide you with 52 per cent of the recommended Dietary Allowance of vitamin B6.

This vitamin plays a key role in nerve cell communication, red blood cell formation, and antibody combinations that are needed to fight various diseases.

The coconut water base is also great for replenishing lost electrolytes to help you stay hydrated.

2 cups fresh spinach 1 cup unsweetened
coconut water
1 orange, peeled
2 cups chopped mango 1 cup chopped pineapple
Juice of half a lime, plus
2 lime slices for garnish Coarse salt for rim of glasses (optional)

1. Blend the spinach, coconut water, and orange until smooth.
2. Add the mango, pineapple, and lime juice, and blend again.
If desired, rub the rims of two margarita glasses with the squeezed lime, and then dip the rims in
coarse salt. Pour the smoothie into the glasses and garnish
each with a lime slice.
