Sprinter fails doping test

TESTS: Bernice Wilson

BRITISH ATHLETICS has been rocked by news that sprinter Bernice Wilson has been suspended after failing a doping test.

UK Athletics says Wilson tested positive for testosterone and clenbuterol after a meet on June 12 in Bedford, England.
Clenbuterol is the same anabolic agent that Spanish cyclist Alberto Contador tested positive for during last year's Tour de France. He blamed the test on contaminated beef.

UK Athletics says Wilson has been provisionally suspended from July 9 and can request a hearing. She could face a two-year ban if found guilty of doping.

Wilson, coached by George Skafidas of Greece, ran the 60 metres at the European Indoor Championships in March but failed to reach the final.

Wilson represented Great Britain for the first time in March at the European Indoor Championships in Paris where she reached the semi-finals of the 60m.

She failed to qualify for last year's Commonwealth Games but this year beat the Olympic A standard of 7.30 seconds with a 7.25secs personal best.

Wilson works as a sport development officer at East Lindsey District Council.
