CARNIVAL REVELLERS and spectators are gearing up to the opening of Antigua carnival, which takes place later today.

This afternoon’s opening events will start with a parade the city of St John’s, followed by an opening ceremony at Carnival City from 7pm (AST).

The carnival, which takes place in the streets of the islands capital St John’s, Carnival City and the Antigua Recreation Ground, is in its 61st year.

The festival of events – both day and night – bring the island to life, making it a primetime for tourists and carnival chasers to visit.

Antigua’s carnival climaxes with a street party called Last Lap through the streets of St John’s, the hub of the season’s action, on August 7.

If you’re hopping on a flight to join in the action or planning a trip for next year, here are some things to look out for.

T-shirt Mas
Ccarnival goers will take to the streets in an array of bright coloured t-shirts. This event is a hit among those who want the festival fun without the big price tag. Expect good vibes, music and food.

Wadadli Beer Calypso Monarch
Calysonian’s compete for the title of monarch at this popular event. Reigning monarch King Zacari will defend his crown against singers including Thalia, Singin Althea, Stumpy and more. Go prepared to sing along and show your support for you favourite.

Emancipation Day
A day of historical importance for reflection, Emancipation Day recognises the struggles of our ancestors and the events that led up to emancipation.

Parade of the bands
This major event sees the island’s creativity on full show. You don’t need to be taking part in the parade to have fun. Stand and dance on the sidelines as the incredible, vibrant costumes and blaring sound systems pass you by.
