Texas teen punished for lying about gang-rape

A PENALTY of up to 10 years in prison could be the price Breana Harmon, 19, pays for lying to police about being raped and violently assaulted in a secluded forest.

The teenager was caught in the act of lying after police noticed the tears in her jeans did not align with the cuts in her legs, which she inflicted on herself to make her tale about being kidnapped seem true. After being examined internally by a nurse, it was reported that she did not appear to have been physically violated.

Harmon admitted that she had been lying about the incident in March this year and confided in police from Denison, Texas. She told officers that "things from her past started going through her head" that inspired her to self-harm. To hide this from her parents, she decided to make-up the rape story.

This week Harmon was charged with tampering with physical evidence and tampering with government record, upping her charge from misdemeanour to the more serious felony type.

Grayson County District Attorney Joe Brown said:

“The more we have looked at what happened in this case, and considered the harm it caused, and certainly could have caused, we believe what she did fits these higher charges,” Brown said. “What she did was very serious, and we believe it was felony conduct.”
