Trayvon Martin death: Zimmerman charged

CHARGED: Watchman charged with second-degree unpremeditated murder over the death of Trayvon Martin

THE MAN who shot black teenager Trayvon Martin in alleged self-defense, has been charged with second-degree unpremeditated murder.

George Zimmerman, 28, turned himself in on Wednesday and is now in custody, special prosecutor Angela Corey reportedly said.

The neightbourhood watchman previously told Florida police that the Martin had punched him in the face, climbed on top of him and slammed his head into the sidewalk, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

Zimmerman, also claimed the 17-year-old was acting 'suspicious' and he later shot him in self-defence after the confrontation in the Sanford, Florida, gated community on Feb 26.

Acccording to the BBC Trayvon's parents said the charge was a first step towards justice but that there was still 'a long way to go'.
