Turkish delight for Team GB

WINNING QUARTET: (l-r) Cox, Ohuruogu, Sanders and Perri Shakes-Drayton

TEAM GB recorded their most successful record tally at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul, Turkey after claiming two golds, three silvers and four bronze medals this weekend.

The women’s 4x400m relay defeated the Americans by the skin of their teeth on Sunday (March 11) in the penultimate competition of the Championships while 39-year-old triple jumper Yamile Aldama’s leap of 14.82m was enough to capture gold on Saturday (March 10).

The quartet of Shana Cox, Nicola Sanders, Christine Ohuruogu and Perri Shakes-Drayton narrowly beat an America team consisting of the 400m individual gold medallist Sanya Richards-Ross on their anchor leg.

Having started her leg in third place, Olympic champion Ohuruogu showed form reminiscent to her Beijing glory of four year ago, as she powered passed both the Russian and American athletes who were ahead of her.

Then on the final leg, 400m hurdler Shakes-Drayton dramatically held off a late charge from Richards-Ross to win in a world’s fastest time of 3mins 28.76 seconds.

Runners-up positions on the podium for Team GB were occupied by the men’s 4x400m relay, 60m hurdler Tiffany Porter and Jessica Ennis in the pentathlon while Andrew Osagie, Shara Proctor, Dwain Chambers and Holly Bleasdale finished third in the 800m, long jump, 60m and pole vault respectively.

The medals obtained by Britain placed them second in the medal table behind USA and were Team GB’s biggest haul ever at a World Indoor Championships.

Pleased by Britain’s performance over the three days, UK athletics head coach Charles van Commenee said: “We have every reason to travel home very happy.”
