VICTORIA SECRET has come under criticism as commentators on Twitter have called out the similarities between their designs and that of West Indian carnival costumes.

The Victoria Secret show - which will air on Dec 2 - recently announced Elsa Hosk as the model wearing their special VS fantasy bra which is renowned for its pricey design and style.

After images of this year’s fantasy bra were revealed, a Twitter user shared images of other fantasy bras through the years.

The vibrant designs then began to draw criticism, with one person taking to Twitter saying: “We all know where they get their inspiration from. West Indian carnivals costumes.”

Other commentators also picked up on the comparison. “These look like carnival costumes,” wrote on tweeter while another said: “Trinidadian carnival designers need to start copyrighting their stuff.”

A typical Caribbean carnival often features lavishly attired dancers, masquerades and decorated floats which are key to the celebrations. Costumes can include a mixture of fabrics from sequins, beads, fathers and much more.

As a professional designer is usually responsible for designing costumes for particular groups - from the theme to the style - this often displays the design talents of those across the Caribbean diaspora and has been a source of inspiration for many years.
