Tyra Banks opens up about relationship with Naomi Campbell

OPENING UP: Tyra Banks

TYRA BANKS has opened up about her relationship with fellow model Naomi Campbell in a new interview.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal Banks discussed their erratic relationship, which she clarified was not “a rivalry”.

“A rivalry is between two equals to me whereas one was very dominant, she was a supermodel, and I was just this new girl that had got on a plane from Paris and was studying fashion and magazines,” she said.

Banks modelling career kick started at a time when Naomi was already a recognised name on the catwalk. Banks explained she experienced “very painful early days in Paris” due to Campbell’s “evil and awful” attitudes towards her.

She said: “As much as I was booking fashion shows, people didn’t know I was going home at night crying my eyes out because the woman I was looking up to seemed like she just didn’t want me to be there and was doing everything in her power to make me go away,”

The 45 year old model-turned-entrepreneur told the Wall Street Journal she didn’t understand why Campbell treated her in such a way and felt the British model always kept her at arm's length. She questioned why “[Naomi] was doing everything in her power to make [her] go away”.

On reflection she began to understand Campbell “was reacting to an industry that was all about a token”.

Banks explained nobody pitted Kate Moss against Christy Turlington when she first emerged on the modelling scene.

“They weren’t like, look out, another brunette is on the loose. But when I came on the scene, ‘Naomi, look out. There’s a black girl that’s going to take your spot’. As black women, the industry moulded us to envy each other.”

Despite their difficult past, it does seem as though Banks and Campbell have since reconciled.

In 2013, Campbell praised Banks achievements in an interview with Elle Magazine.
“I’m proud of her as a woman of colour. She’s given girls opportunity, and God bless her.”
