Villarreal fined €12,000 for Dani Alves banana thrower

ABUSED: Alves (PA)

SPANISH FOOTBALL authorities have dished out a €12,000 fine to Villarreal after one of its supporters threw a banana at Dani Alves which led to the Barcelona player peeling and eating the fruit in response to the racist gesture.

The incident took place during a league match last month that Barca won 3-2, and Alves’ reaction sparked a global online campaign against racism that featured leading players and celebrities snapping themselves with bananas.

Villarreal have already identified the man who threw the banana and said the 26-year-old fan has been banned from the stadium for life.

Alves, who was subjected to the abuse on April 27, was heavily critical of Spain’s attitude to race after the incident.

He claimed the European country is “very backward” in its approach to tackling racism, while he said he wanted the man responsible for throwing the banana publicly shamed.

A spokesman for Villarreal said: “We have accepted the €12,000 fine.

“The federation were though pleased with the quick and positive action that the club took by identifying the fan.”
