DOWN BUT NOT OUT: Serena Williams

SERENA WILLIAMS is heading back up the tennis rankings. Williams leapt 90 places in the world rankings after winning her first title in over a year at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford late on Sunday night, defeating Marion Bartoli 7-5, 6-1 to lift her first title on American soil since the 2009 US Open.

Williams had fallen to a lowly world No 169 after failing to defend her Wimbledon title last month, her now infamous foot injury having resulted in almost a year attending parties and fashion shows rather than hitting tennis balls.

But her victory on the Stanford University campus, which was also her first regular WTA title since 2008, proved that the former world No 1 is not content to sign off on her career just yet.

“I hated the triple digits,” Williams said, scotching the notion that she doesn’t take an interest in her spot in the computerized pecking order. I’ve got to get to single digits, though.”
