West Indies ace to lead Leicestershire

APPOINTMENT: Ramnaresh Sarwan

WEST INDIES batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan will captain Leicestershire during the 2013 County Championship season.
Sarwan, who committed himself to the club by extending his one-year deal to a three-year arrangement recently, will take over the reins from former England player Matthew Hoggard.

Leicestershire chief executive, Mike Siddall, said it was an opportunity to "put a succession plan in place for the future", with head coach Phil Whitticase adding: "I've really enjoyed working with Matthew over the past three years, especially during our successful T20 campaign. It is important for everyone to get behind Ronnie as we look to take the club forward."

Guyana-born Sarwan is a veteran of 87 Tests and 173 one-day internationals. On his first tour, to England in 2000, Sarwan lived up to the hype surrounding his career by topping the averages.

At present he is not part of West Indies coach Ottis Gibson’s plans.
