What's The Play? with Anthony 'Play' Douglas

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Mr Play caught up with Hot97 fm's DJ Magic

ONE WORD, memorial! I’m sure many of you have travelled to some hot spots like Miami, Cancun or Vegas over the last weekend to soak up the sun and get turnt at lit pool and beach parties and nightclubs with iconic DJs and artists in the R&B and hip hop world!

As for Mr Play, I spent my Memorial Day Weekend aka MDW with many of my stateside friends in Punta Cana for the We Are DR Live festival in the Dominican Republic. Resident DJ for my fifth year running, I must admit the event has become geared more towards the grown and sexy crowd. It's not mad hype, but instead a mature party crowd that know how to “turn up” and when to “turn down” (if you know what I mean).

We had a weekend packed full of activities and parties. The most litty moment and highlight for me was the yacht party; where I DJ’ed while we sailed the beautiful Atlantic waters.

SUN, SEA AND SAND: Mr Play was the resident DJ at this year's We Are Dr Live festival

I want to send huge shout outs to the We Are DR Live team: John, Judy and the rest of the crew. Nuff love.

Everyone’s already asking: “Where will Mr Play be next #MDW?” So I’ll let you in on my not-so-secret plan...Jamaica! Yes you heard it here first. Whether you’re from yard or you’ve never been, trust it’s the place to be in 2019! Look out for my updates and join the “litty committee”.

FESTIVAL: Many of Mr Play's stateside friends attended the We Are Dr Live festival over the weekend

I had a good time out in the Dominican Republic where I caught up with my boy DJ Magic, Brooklyn’s finest and resident DJ on Hot97. Here’s more on our chat:

Q: Who is DJ Magic?
A: A DJ from Brooklyn, New York, who is on Hot97 every Saturday night 12am and every Sunday 7pm. He also does the biggest Car and Bike Show in NYC every summer. And he does a show that’s on called Ridin Out Freestyles with new artist getting in the car freestyling but if they are wack they get kicked out the car. I also DJ for Mase the artist and sometimes for Lil Kim.

Q: What has 2018 been like for you so far?
A: It’s been great. I have been busy traveling as a DJ for Mase and LiL Kim. And I've also been filming for my show on Hot97 called Ridin Out Freestyles and my Revolt show that I've been chosen for.

Q: What's the best thing about doing what you do in the US?
A: The best thing is being able to travel to other states in the US with my promo vehicles and travel with my brand.

Q: Name some of the people you like to work with in the future?
A: I would like to work with people in other countries and islands. I just love working with other talent all over the world so no names in particular, I’m not biased!

Q: Tell us something about yourself that not many people know?
A: I’m a boat captain. I love decorating my home and home shopping. I’m a big music lover like all types.

Q: What advice would you give your younger self?
A: Always promote your brand and grow your business and have more than one focus.

Q: What are your top three songs at the moment?
A: I am an R&B head but I love album cuts, so picking three isn’t happening [laughs].

Q: Where do you see yourself in five years' time?
A: I see myself having a weekly show on Hot97 and also do my Big DJ Magic car show all over the country and my Ridin Out show might be on a big network like Nick or Bet or Revolt.

Q: Where can we follow DJ Magic and his movements?
A: Follow @iamdjmagic on Twitter and Instagram.
