The Wheel Deal: Super Stonic!

REVIEW: Kia Stonic

THE WHEEL Deal recently took to the roads of Newbury to take in the UK media launch of the new Kia Stonic. After a day of test driving the latest offering from the Korean manufacturer, I can conclude that they have another winner on their hands.

Kia have already given us a new versions of the Picanto, Rio and a brand new Niro in recent times, and they are set to up their units with the impressive Stonic.

When you dip your toes into the highly competitive Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) market you have to tread with caution and/or produce a vehicle that will stir the market, Kia have done the latter.

On the various Newbury roads the Stonic handled itself with surprising aplomb. It was a fun drive; taking bends and general manoeuvring was child’s play.

The lofty driving position gives good road visibility and the safety features such as lane departure, autonomous emergency braking and blind spot monitorin,g loaded as standard, added to the feelgood factor.

The Stonic’s smart interior will rival the best for its class. The paintwork was eye-catching with deep grey vehicles being illuminated by a splash of red, orange or yellow.

The dashboard has clear displays. I found it sensible and logical with a fully compatible infotainment system and lots of extras; heated front seats and D-cut steering wheel, smart key entry on some models and parking guidance.

Thankfully the Stonic has firm lumbar support seats designed to take the stress out of long trips. I was having so much fun I missed an exit on the M4 and got caught in traffic. However, it was no problem at all as I had time and a comfortable Stonic on my hands.

The super Stonic was spacious up front and back seat passengers will benefit from good leg room. For the family-orientated there are plenty of storage cubbies. The boot has decent with some 352 litres with rear seats split to carry larger items.

Kia’s unbeatable seven-year warranty is key for any potential owner as it demonstrates the confidence and belief Kia has in the product, design and manufacturing, giving consumers peace of mind. Kia as a company, like its cars, is moving at a pace.
