WILL SMITH has welcomed reaching the big five-0 with a bungee jump over the Grand Canyon.

Smith, who turned 50 years old yesterday, jumped out of a helicopter as it hovered over the layered red rock in Arizona.

The actor was joined by his family and a crowd who encouraged him before and during the big leap.

Smith said that before the jump he was “terrified to walk up to the edge”.

He shared a picture of himself and his wife and children before the stunt took place.

In the caption he said: “My squad holding me down for my big 5-0.”

The jump was live-streamed on Smith’s YouTube channel.

“I am not going to be able to articulate it thoroughly right now but here's a real relationship between freedom and joy. There's an idea bubbling in my mind, as fear as a cage, fear actually traps you,” he said after the jump.

The I am Legend actor overcame his fear of heights to complete the leap.

He said: "Life is hard. You might get hurt. Your heart might get broken. You might lose your job. But you've still got to commit."

Smith used the jump to raise money for charity.

He partnered with Omaze, Global Citizen and YouTube to fundraise money for Education Cannot Wait.

The charity is a global fund that works to transform the delivery of education in emergencies, a time when children’s access to education is most at risk.

The idea for the helicopter bungee jump came about after YouTube vloggers Yes Theory challenged Smith.

The vlogging trio addressed Smith in a YouTube video earlier this year.

They said: “You've been a positive and motivational role model for the past few decades and have inspired millions, including us, to work hard and face our fears head-on. So as a token of our gratitude, we wanted to get you to face something that might scare you and take you heli bungee jumping with us! We have one of the best pilots in the US on board and would love nothing more than to share such an amazing experience with you.”
