BBC 1Xtra’s Dotty praised for criticising broadcaster over Kobe and LeBron mix-up

The presenter slammed her employer's mistake during her radio show

BBC 1XTRA presenter Dotty has been praised for calling out her employer for using footage of LeBron James in a segment about Kobe Bryant’s death.

Dotty, who presents the 1Xtra Breakfast Show, slammed the broadcaster in the Trashbag Tuesday segment of her programme.

Shortly after news of Bryant’s death was revealed, BBC News at 10 featured footage of James on the court in a section of its report on Bryant.

Speaking on her show yesterday, Dotty said: “It is unforgivable. We do not all look the same. Our faces are not interchangeable. There is no excuse for this error and we can’t just write it off as incompetence, not today. I’ll tell you why. You would not confuse Messi with Ronaldo, you would not confuse Nadal with Federer, you would not confuse, Schumacher with Jenson Button so why always us, I ask? Even when the name is on the back of the jersey, you make the mistake.

“I say it again, it’s unforgivable and I’ll tell you why mistakes like this are bad, because they divert the conversation. At a time when we should be mourning and celebrating the life of a legacy, the conversation becomes about an error that the BBC made.”

Following the mistake, newsreader Reeta Chakrabarti apologised on air and later Paul Royall, editor of BBC News at Six and Ten, issued an apology on Twitter.

However, Dotty added that the BBC had to do better and called for them not to just apologise but to improve. She ended the criticism by jokingly commenting that she might not have a job after speaking out on the incident.

Her comments have been praised by her listeners and colleagues.

Fellow BBC radio presenter Annie Mac tweeted: “Nothing but respect for Dotty.”

One Twitter user said: “99.9% of people would never ever have been brave enough to call this out on that platform. Big up Dotty.”

Others called her “brave” and expressed concerns over her future at the BBC.
