Dotun Adebayo lands new BBC show

The broadcaster and Voice newspaper columnist has a new presenting job

DOTUN ADEBAYO: Rate him or hate him - you can’t ignore him!

BBC BROADCASTER and Voice columnist Dotun Adebayo has landed a new BBC show.

Adebayo, who currently fronts the overnight programme at weekends, will present in the same slot throughout the week, Mondays through to Fridays, from April on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Adebayo said: “Wow, what an honour it is to be given the privilege of hosting this amazing station five nights a week. It will be worth staying up for…I promise.”

He replaces Rhod Sharp who announced he was standing down last year.

“There is no one better to succeed Rhod Sharp”

Heidi Dawson, controller of BBC Radio 5 Live

Sharp, the presenter of Up All Night, has been with the station since its launch in 1994.

Adebayo will continue to present his Sunday evening discussion programme on BBC Radio London.

Heidi Dawson, controller of BBC Radio 5 Live, said: “Dotun is well known to our listeners who love his warmth, humour and intelligence. He is an outstanding broadcaster with a passion for late night radio and just how important radio is to listeners at that time of night. There is no one better to succeed Rhod Sharp.”

I’m delighted to know that Dotun Adebayo has succeeded Rhod Sharp. I listen to up all night because I suffered with insomnia. The tone of Rod’s voice almost single-handily made the programme. I know Dotun will do a fantastic job because he has all what it takes to be a great presenter.I hope other Top Organisations are paying attention. Give the job to the person who are capable of delivering, regardless of who they are.All the best Dotun.

Couldn’t happen to a nicer bloke. His current Saturday and Sunday shows are excellent. I don’t know if he will be incorporating his football and music shows within his new schedule..hopefully he will.
A very well deserved reward for this top bloke.

This is such fine news. That I can listen to Datun Adebayo five nights a week seems such a wonderful treat. And I do hope he’ll fine a way to continue his trademark World Football Phone In. I’ve learned so much listening to this show.

    Congratulations Mr. Adebayo.

I listen to Dotun every time he’s on, without fail. SO glad to hear of his new appointment. A REAL presenter and a pleasure to listen to. He allows his interviewees to speak, and doesn’t interrupt!
    Well done Dotun. Brilliant news.

Goodbye 5live. Rhod’s replacement has a childish sense of humour and a lack of the necessary gravitas for serious discussion. There is so much “sport” and “music” across all the radio waves that Rhod Sharp always provided a welcome oasis from all that noise.

Totally agree with you. I now realise how good Rhod Sharp was!

Phil Williams, now Rhod Sharp, when is this station loosing these superb presenters ? Dotun I’d okay but not in the same league as Rhod who’s silky, professional style I will really miss. That’s Classic FM will have a new listener.

What’s happened to Up All Night?
It’s turned into just another phone in show which are ‘two a penny’ across the airwaves. Dotun is too fond of his own voice – why else did he stubbornly refuse to let the signature tune play for even one second before jumping in with his non stop verbal onslaught? With three hours to use, surely he could have let the listeners hear the signature tune and then speak more slowly with a full stop between sentences. Rhod is a class above. New man Jim is promising, but let him work to the format made so successful by Rhod – not just a bland phone in which is presumably cheaper. Come on BBC – wake up and restore Up All Night (preferably not just with Dotun, but with a new voice at least for part of the week).

Dotun, definitely not for me,it’s all about Dotun not even in the same league as Rhod. I’m pretty sure up all night has lost THOUSANDS of listeners.
The way the BBC has treated Rhod is appalling not even letting Rhod say goodbye.. shocking!
Your demise starts now aunty Been.

      Couldn’t agree more!

    Totally agree!

Up All Night has been transformed into an insomniac’s worst nightmare a banal late night phone in with a rather banal host Jim Davis.

I will no longer be tuning in. Cannot stand the constant phone ins. Dotun makes my toes curl with embarrassment. No one to compare with Rod Sharpe, he is a master broadcaster.

    • | Paul Smith

      100% agree

  16. | JAMES ANDREWS

Rhod Sharpe is a big loss and the new format is cheap nonsense broadcasting. Education was a big part of the previous format and that has now been lost.

    • | Paul Smith

      100% agree

  17. | Phillip Jones

I can’t listen to Up All Night any more. The phone-in format, however temporary it is, has become a forum for right-wing old whingers who feel sorry for themselves, want a bit of a moan and want to perform.

There’s no intelligent articles or reporting any more, the regular features are missed, and at the moment, something uplifting instead of all the negativity the phone-ins are generating, is required.

    The pits

    • | Paul Smith

Very well put! It’s AWFUL now.

I discovered Rhod Sharpe in 1997, what a star and what a loss to up all night! He is head and shoulders ahead of the pack. I cannot knock other presenters but I am afraid they are nowhere near. It is everything with Rhod. It is the voice, the content, the challenge, the modesty, the variety of topics. Sadly, I have been struggling to tune in since his departure. Years ago, I told my wife it will be never the same after Rhod; unfortunately, it has been confirmed.

    • | Paul Smith

Very well put. I absolutely agree with you.
