Notting Hill Carnival 2021 might still be happening

BRING IT COME: Some can't wait for Carnival

FOLLOWING THEIR promise to keep people notified organisers have said this years Notting Hill Carnival has not been ruled out according to tweets from the official twitter account last night.

The news was met with a mixture of responses with one person alluding to the fact that with Glastonbury already cancelled all outdoor events of similar ilk should follow suit.

Others were more in favour with one patron writing: “”

The message from the NHC account read: “In response to all the enquiries… we are continuing to plan as usual for NHC 2021… and also preparing for every eventuality.

“Due to the uncertainty we are all facing.. our board will not be making a decision until closer to the summer. Please look out for updates here.”

Last years events was cancelled in May with a statement which read: “Like all events around the world, the COVID-19 pandemic has meant that Notting Hill Carnival has faced many challenges this year.

They can practise but will the band get to play?

“After lengthy consultations with our strategic partners and our Advisory Council, the Board has taken the decision that this year’s Carnival will not take place on the streets of Notting Hill as it has done for over 50 years.”

For the ardent Carnival goer the news will pose as a tonic for others, not so much.

No way should this be held this year. I have lived here reluctantly on the main route for over 30 years and know how congested it is and dangerous. I have managed in the last few years to take my summer holiday then abroad but there is a good chance that that option will be closed to me.

I first ever attended the carnival when I was 8yrs old and I went with my mum, dad, brother and his friend, and all l really remembered was the amazing atmosphere, the beauty of the different cultures and ethnicities of people all enjoying themselves with NO racial diversity, and of course the music and food lol, I’m now 50yrs old, and due to moving to the west country I have not attended for over 16yrs, but since the first time I went I always tried to make sure I went and continued to go as a matter of respect, pride and a way for me to escape my diversity ,and have no inhibitions with who I was, I’m ( halfcast ) ” mixed race ” and I personally think that after all the propaganda, social distant and the BLM issues that humanity doesn’t need anymore segregation AND INSTEAD WE SHOULD be allowed to celebrate the most cultural and social gathering that is Notting Hill Carnival!! I’d understand if ALL public transport was still under lockdown But it’s not, so what’s the difference?? It’s an event that is held outside, and after what the country/world has been through WE THE PEOPLE need to come back together and LOVE THY NEIGHBOR’S ( as its stated in the bible and the first ever laws of Man ( The 10 Commandments) So the people who are saying that it should be cancelled Again…. stop being hypocritical by your negative opinions and then catch a bus, tube, train or stand in a cue in your supermarket ect!! I hope that others will share my opinion

I’ve been going to Notting Hill carnival ever since I was 11 and I’ve gone each year both Sunday and Monday and last year was the first year of not attending as it got cancelled because of the Covid Notting Hill carnival is the best carnival in the whole world and has been happening for years so why can’t we have it this year when we’ve been having a lot of protests happening in London so why can’t we have carnival

I would really hope that the Notting Hill Carnival Committee would go ahead with Carnival this year. We need to get back to some sort of normality as quickly as possible, all this social distancing is nonsense, nothing is going to happen, I believe the government were totally scaremongering about this from the start. The committee are going to have to be brave about this and make it happen. Vince

To read some of the comments about scaremongering really goes to show how stupid people are. I am Carribean and lost my sister (65) and nephew (32!!!), no underlining health conditions. The WORLD has suffered, not just the UK. People want to blame everyone but themselves. Carnival is in no way important or holds a higher ranking over life! Yes, it’s culture, and I have attended for many many years but some things need to be put on hold until the world has healed. It’s bad enough that many in the BAME community are against the vaccine and against any regulations in general, refusing to follow protocol. Imagine the stupidity that would take place if NHC 2021 went ahead.

It’s crazy to even contemplate holding the NHC this year. I realise it will be the 2nd year the carnival will not go ahead, but to allow thousands of people to congregate and mix over the course of a weekend would be the wrong decision. The streets and areas usually designated for the carnival are not large enough to enable safe distancing. If the carnival happens, it will be a matter of months, maybe weeks, before there will be another outbreak of this devastating virus. Let’s stay safe this year and plan for 2022.

Yes the carnival should go ahead. Normality is needed. Carnival is a representative of black history & all cultures celebrating together. It is much needed.
Covid-19 was scaremongering by the government. Doctors were paid to put covid-19 on the death certificate for everyone with underlying health issues who passed away. Has Boris & everyone in government had the vaccination yet??

Carnival has to go ahead this year! All of the most vulnerable people in our population will have been vaccinated, and many individuals will have returned to work. Those who feel unsafe are welcome to stay at home but life needs to return to normal.

I wonder how many of those protesting NHC have followed the exact guidelines, precisely as they should, for the whole of the pandemic. How many of them have had or are even willing to have the vaccine?! How many have encouraged, supported or partaken in any riots or peaceful protests? How many have breached the guidelines to see people outside their households when they shouldn’t, shared a car journey without a mask when they shouldn’t? Travelled from your homes outside of legally permitted reasons ? Delivered home cooked food to another household? Or shared fresh, unpackaged produce with a neighbour?!

I love carnival and have gone for most years, we do need to return to normality… however the hospitals need to return to normality, people need operations proper with heart defects and diseases and people with cancer etc need to be getting their routine appointments. The carnival because of over heavily indulgence of alcohol and drugs A LOT of people end up going to hospital you see ambulances pretty constant I know as I live just off the route, many countries are having new variants and Europe still in third waves and as this government is allowing people to fly in unchecked still unfortunately we will see a rise in hospital admissions so carnival this year wouldn’t be advisable for these reasons as frustrating as annoying as this is

I love Carnival & live right in the middle of it,have been going since the early 80’s however due to the circumstances I feel it would be wrong to hold it this year,it would be impossible to social distance & once alcohol has been consumed people forget to keep their distance so sadly I think we should wait another year to be safe

How many times are we going to put ‘Entertainment’ before health then cry when it’s taken away from us again
For the sake of ‘normality’ to return quicker we have to make these sacrifices now or stay in the cycle

Love carnival – maybe just the steel bands and not the polluting half empty massive lorries with speakers trailing around Grove.
There certainly won’t be as many visitors with the travel ban so maybe it will become a smaller, more musical event. Love steel orchestras !

Well they have just held a massive party in Liverpool as a trial, no social distancing or masks. So fingers crossed..also most people that participate on the road would have exposed themselves to the “virus” from as early as 2019 and most likely have fought it and built antibodies..Trinidad 2020 was the last big one where revellers would have come from all over the world including China)from Dec 2019 right through till March 2019, so even more likely it was being transmitted on a huge scale unknowingly…interesting that Trinidad data reports just over 160 deaths considering the influx of tourists in that period of contagion…to be honest I feel they want to end Carnival on the streets of NHC anyway and take to a place where they can have more control on the profit side of things while keeping those that have been complaining about 2 days out of 365 sweet… maybe now it’s time for us to invest our carnival funds in the Caribbean and now Africa.. support our promoters here by attending fetes all year and then take our money home 😊

Carnival is a time when all Nation should forgetting all tribulation of yesteryear and live in UNITY being able to walk the streets with out fear of being attack for what ever means.
On such occasions NATIONALISM if all greeds attend these two days of REALITY drinking regardless but holding a steady pace of life and thinking about tomorrow. This two day event is not just for one set of people it’s for everyone.
As we move around the perimeter we observe SOUND SYSTEM’S of different level R&B HIP HOP ROOTS MUSIC DUB SOULFUL each system making joyful noise for the people on this two day event spending there money on stalls provided as they stroll through buying JERK CHICKEN AND RICE, ORIENTAL DISHES and so on, presences are the LAW ENFORCEMENT and SECURITY yet we fet the youths that try to destroy things for the majority who attends with peaceful minds carrying out their foolishness that the LAW ENFORCEMENT have to act arresting those who make it bad for themselves. As society adapts to REALISM yes there must be away lets stamp out those that are those that are known for transgression and think positive if needed use ARCHES SCANNERS as each and everyone who is not part of the CARNIVAL be screened if needed use dogs via the LAW ENFORCEMENT we the people of SOCIETY that attends every year just want to be able to engage in every August at NOTTINGHILL CARNIVAL without fear.
Yes with the use of these ARCHES stall may have too pay a bit more but it benefits the majority that are present each year but words of mouth have too be spoken safety is assuring

I love the Notting Hill carnival, have attending since the late 80’s. But, due to the virus I will not attend, my health and well-being are much more important than two days of festivities. Notting Hill committee should focus on virtual carnival and put the local communities health first, there will be carnival in 2022.

No it shouldn’t go ahead, those that say it should are extremely selfish.
I have live in the golborne area all my life and It has already out grown the streets of north Kensington and should be moved to hyde park or somewhere similar during normal times. That’s a debate for another time, however we should all agree in that it should not go ahead at all this year due to COVID.
We can’t keep having lockdowns are it would be impossible to maintain social distancing

I live right in the middle of Notting Hill and would dearly love the Carnival to be held this year , However after reading some of the ” it’s scaremongering and all lies comments ”
    I’d rather it wasn’t …
The mindset of some of these people are just not right.
People have lost loved ones , businesses have closed for good and your selfish person thinks the government did this for what reason.
Disgusting attitude , yes we have a rubbish government here in the UK but don’t blame them for Covid outbreak look closer to home !!!

Carnival should be kept this year and for anyone who does NOT feel safe, STAY HOME, but don’t ruin a 50 plus year long tradition for everyone else. What’s the point of having your vaccinations and going through all of this just to be told “ yeah thanks for getting the jab but we aren’t going to have carnival cause I few people are nervous” the amount of places open in the country, but you think this 1 day is going to be the game changer-your ridiculous. Covid isn’t going away anytime soon.
If that’s how things are going to go people should be just put back into strict lock down because what is the point of these double standards. Shopping malls, cinema, clubs, pools etc ALL open even though they’re in closed spaces, but CARNIVAL which is OUTSIDE, is cancelled????
IF YOU DONT FEEL SAFE DO NOT GO.
But do NOT ruin it for everyone ELSE

Definitely should go on. I went for the first time in 2019 and it was spectacular. Why shouldn’t it go on in any even. After the terrible last year with Covid I think we all need to have something to look forward to.

I have been photographing the Notting Hill carnival for the last 45 years for the Carnival Arts Committee.
Last year was was a virtual show online so some of my photo`s were shown as a montage over the years.
I really hope it goes ahead this year 2021 as the hard work that goes into it would be a waste.
It seems other events have been given the go ahead like Glastonbury.
So please ” Don`t Stop The Carnival”
