‘I Come From Brixton Baby’

Mural spray-painted in honour of a UK rapper many loved

FITTING: In Ty Chijioke's honour

IF YOU’RE driving down Somerleyton Road in south London it’ll be hard for you not to notice the freshly spray-painted mural of rapper Ty Chijioke who recently passed away.

Entitled ‘‘I Come From Brixton Baby’’, the artwork was brought to life last weekend by Birmingham born Carlene De Sozer, who set about her mission to create an artistic legacy befitting of man many loved.

Witnessing the creation first hand were a small crowd of fans, local residents and passersby who were familiar with Ty and his work.

Poignantly, rapper and friend of Ty Blak Twang was also present.

Paul Reid, founder of Disrupt Space, a black arts agency established to represent emerging visual artists, said the occassion felt apt and the end result was a moving tribute to Ty.

“Over the weekend a wonderful tribute was made to one of Brixton‘s finest, Ty Chijioke an incredible artist loved by so many.

“Carlene De Sozer‘s representation now adorns Somerleyton Road like never before.

“I was truly moved to see the tribute take shape. We applaud Carlene, the artist for her superb artistry, moving up and down the ladders with spray cans in hand; a sister on a mission.

“‘I Come From Brixton Baby’ is in acknowledgement of our Brother’s catalogue of work, an awesome contribution and an inspiration for so many. His legacy will live on.”
