NOTTING HILL Carnival Ltd (the official organisers of Notting Hill Carnival) and Getty Images, a world leader in visual communications, have announced an exclusive partnership, with Getty Images appointed official photography partner.

The partnership aims to build awareness of the landmark cultural event, support visual storytelling within the Notting Hill Carnival (NHC) community and provide a platform of learning and promotion to NHC’s network of existing photographers and aspiring amateur photographers.

Imagery

Within the partnership Getty Images will be making its wholly-owned imagery of the Carnival available free of charge to Notting Hill Carnival Ltd for editorial use across its platforms, sharing the visual history of Carnival with its community.

Getty Images is committed to supporting and promoting diverse perspectives behind the lens.

Getty Images will also provide space on its unrivalled global distribution platform, and Getty Images Entertainment Social handles over the NHC weekend to showcase some of the best images of socially distanced Carnival parties as taken by photographers from the NHC community.

Matthew Phillip, CEO of Notting Hill Carnival Ltd, said: “We are delighted to be in partnership with Getty and offering young adults in the local area an opportunity to explore their passion further.

Collin Hills, Youth and Activities Manager of Carnival Village Trust, added: “For young people in the area, to be exposed to this sort of insight for free could be the inspiration they need to expand their passion further or even find a path into a much sought-after creative profession.”

Iconic

“The Notting Hill Carnival is an iconic event known worldwide for its spirit of bringing people together so we could not be more proud to partner with Notting Hill Carnival Ltd to show the world how its community is keeping that spirit alive in 2020,” said Christopher Sleet, Director Sport & Entertainment at Getty Images.

“We are also proud to be supporting the Carnival’s community of photographic talent, highlighting their work in front of a global audience on our platforms.”

The Photography Project

The partnership will also see Getty Images team up with the Carnival Village Trust (NHC’s parent organisation) to launch The Photography Project, an initiative aimed at educating and inspiring amateur photographers from the local area, giving them the opportunity to develop their skillset and confidence with an end goal of shooting Notting Hill Carnival 2021 as a Getty Images contributor.

For young people in the area, to be exposed to this sort of insight for free could be the inspiration they need to expand their passion further.

Starting with Notting Hill Carnival’s Access All Area online event later this month (August 29, 30, 31 at www.nhcarnival.org), it will initially give a handful of young adults (aged 16 – 25) who are passionate about photography the opportunity to visually depict and potentially have published their work of the first Notting Hill Carnival in 54 years that is not taking place on the streets. These pictures will tell the story of a socially distanced, at-home and online carnival due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Identified

The selection of amateur photographers, identified by the Carnival Village Trust, will be taken through a year-long programme which will include the following sessions:

Technical workshop on how to use cameras, and the practical side to editing and delivering content which will offer participants professional development

Business workshop on professional photography including considerations such as copyright, contracts, picture delivery systems and beyond

Inspirational seminars with expert Getty Images photographers talking through their work, what inspires them and key learnings they have had in their career

Professional portfolio reviews and critiques from Getty Images’ editors and photographers, offering positive and actionable advice

Opportunities to shadow professional photographers from their chosen passion whether that be music, fashion, sport or news to learn and experience the practicalities of taking photographs in their environment.

Provide

The ongoing collaboration will provide a consistent, value-driven opportunity for participants with the ultimate aim to bring a greater awareness of career options in creative industries for young people.

It will create opportunities to develop socially and personally through creative expression and encourage a sustainable flow of young creative industry practitioners, who will act as positive role models to their peers and the wider community.

Sleet continued: “Getty Images is committed to supporting and promoting diverse perspectives behind the lens and we look forward to working with Carnival Village Trust to open up learning and career possibilities within the creative industry for the talent in its community.”
