TWO FORMER footballers hope to score a by winning the Autobiography of the Year award for The Telegraph Sports Book Awards 2020. Eni Aluko and Emile Heskey are among the stellar names in contention for personal accounts of their lives and careers.

World champions of boxing and cricket respctively, Tyson Fury and Ben Stokes, are among the contenders too. Making up the shortlist is record-breaking England Test bowler James Anderson, ex Liverpool, Real Madrid and England striker, Michael Owen, and racing driver Jason Plato.

Aluko’s They Don’t Teach This is a hard-hitting account about the England footballer capped 102 times for her country.

Prejudice

The book explores themes of dual nationality and identity, race and institutional prejudice failure and success.

Heskey made his name at Leicester before moving to Anfield and Even Heskey Scored, is a brisk story of a largely unsung player loved by his team mates, who overcame fierce criticism to live the football dream.

It is a compelling read, concluding thoughtfully that racism remains a blind spot for many people.
