A FREE anthology of books by black British authors is to be supplied to every primary school in England.
The initiative by Reading based-charity, BookTrust, said that the move was to increase diversity in children’s literature.
The collection, called ‘Happy Here’ will be aimed at readers aged seven and older and will feature writers such as Yomi Sode, Clare Weze, Dean Atta, Patrice Lawrence and Sharna Jackson in their work.
BookTrust, publisher Knights Of and the charity Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE) have all collaborated on this fantastic project.
Speaking to the BBC, Jill Coleman, director of children’s books at BookTrust said that the project will “thrill and inspire” children across the country.
“We are proud to be working with Knights Of and CLPE as part of our effort to drive a long-term, sustainable increase in the diversity of voices published in children’s literature,” she said.
Aimee Felone, co-founder of Knights Of, told the BBC that the new collection will seek to “amplify, uplift and celebrate” what it means to be Black and Britsh in the UK today.
She said: “Each and every author and illustrator has focused not on the trauma or hardship of their existence, which is too often highlighted in children’s fiction, but the experience and possibility of happiness for their characters.”
