BEYONCÉ HAS said she wants to shift the global perception of what it means to be black with her new visual album, Black is King.

The singer appeared on TV in the US to share some insight on the film and express her excitement that fans will finally be able to view it when it’s available to stream tomorrow.

Speaking exclusively to Good Morning America today in a rare news broadcast, Beyoncé said: “My hope for this film is that it shifts the global perception of the word black, which has always meant inspiration and love and strength and beauty to me. Black is King means black is regal and rich in history, in purpose and in lineage.”

Never before seen clips of the film were shared with viewers during the segment.

‘A story for the ages’

The film has been a year in the making and is highly anticipated.

“I worked with a diverse group of very gifted directors and actors and creatives from all over the world to reimagine the story of The Lion King,” Beyoncé said in the video message aired by GMA.

While the final product of her vision features international contributions, Beyoncé, who has written, directed and executive produced the film, said it all started in her backyard.

Black is King is a reimagination of the lessons of Disney’s The Lion King and comes a year after the release of the photorealistic remake of the 1994 classic. Beyoncé, who voiced the character of Nala in the 2019 film also released an album of songs, The Lion King: The Gift, inspired by the story. 

The 24-time Grammy award winner’s new visual album is based on the music of The Gift and features some of the contributors. Naomi Campbell and Lupita Nyong’o, who are both mentioned in Beyoncé’s song Brown Skin Girl, feature in the film as does Pharrell Williams, who produced several songs on the 2019 Lion King soundtrack.

In a statement, Disney+ said: “The film is a story for the ages that informs and rebuilds the present. A reunion of cultures and shared generational beliefs. A story of how the people left most broken have an extraordinary gift and a purposeful future.”
