THIS WEEKEND saw British musician Kay Young introduces herself to the masses with her enticing new single “Sweet Dreams”.

Her debut offering, the single demonstrates just why Kay is one of the most exciting new artist and producer on the scene.

The newest Roc Nation signee, Kay was personally discovered by Jay Electronica, then signed by Jay-Z, on hearing her demos. Described as a fusion of sounds, paralleling the likes of A Tribe Called Quest and The Internet; but still with a very familial British undertone, Kay is as exciting a breaking new artist, as it gets. 

The “Sweet Dreams”’ video see’s Kay in a straight jacket in the opening scenes, speaking on the visual, Kay says: Having to be hung upside down in the video was a surreal understanding that I was about to be born into my new reality.

On the release of ‘Sweet Dreams’, Kay outlines her excitement around releasing her first piece of music, “I’ve never felt so alive”.

The Dylan Hayes directed visual, displays both her singing and rap ability across a sultry lo-fi Hip Hop beat. Lyrically, her double entendre’s serve dark relatability through lines such as “grandma praying for me so I’m good right?”

Fighting her demons and doubters, by the end of the video, Kay’s allure is magnetic and hooks any listener into wanting to know more.

Proving just why the new era of black-British musicians are rightfully fighting for their place in the mainstream, Kay also pulls a plethora of abstract influence from artists before her. Multifaceted and intriguing, Kay Young is defining an original generation of black British Music, with fire in her belly and plenty more to be shared from her time in the studio.  

With a debut project on the horizon, and co-signs from one of music’s most powerful figures and labels, Kay is soon to be the name on everyone’s lips.
