SIR TREVOR McDonald has joined Classic FM as the station’s newest presenter.

The veteran broadcaster will present a new show on Sunday evenings, starting on 12 July.

A four-part series, Sir Trevor McDonald’s Headliners, will “celebrate the superstar musicians, renowned for their exhilarating performances around the world,” Classic FM said.

McDonald, a classical music fan, will host the show on Sundays between 9pm and 10pm until 2 August.

The programme will look at musicians of past and present, shining a spotlight on the works of everyone from Jacqueline du Pré and André Previn to Sheku Kanneh-Mason and Martha Argerich.

McDonald told Classic FM: “Presenting programmes about the music I love has long been on my bucket list, so I was delighted when Classic FM asked me. I am looking forward to sharing the world’s greatest music and the headlines behind that music with listeners.”

His first Classic FM show will feature the music of legendary conductor John Barbirolli and the Hallé Orchestra, who McDonald saw perform in Trinidad, his birthplace, during the late 1960s.

McDonald, who worked at ITN for more than 30 years, will join the Classic FM’s roster of presenters, which includes Margherita Taylor and Moira Stuart.

Stuart joined the classical music station last year after leaving the BBC.

She made the move after spending 40 years working at the BBC.

Stuart, who initially joined as a morning news presenter, began presenting her own show, The Hall of Fame Concert, in July 2019.
