SINGER AND Supremes co-founder Mary Wilson has passed away at home in Henderson, Nevada.

Her publicist Jay Schwartz announced the news.

Days before she died, she had announced in a YouTube video to fans that she would soon be releasing solo material with Universal Music.

Wilson hoped the songs would be released on March 6, her birthday.

The star started The Supremes when she was just a teenager herself in Detroit. When she left in 1977, she was the only original member and the group disbanded.

The Supremes are believed to be America’s most successful vocal group, and have 12 No.1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100

They were known for hits such as Baby Love, Stop! In the Name of Love and You Can’t Hurry Love.

Baby Love was the only song to reach number one in the UK charts.

February 8 marked 56 years since Stop In The Name of Love was released.

British musician Beverley Knight paid her condolences to the star, saying: “Mary Wilson along with Florence Ballard and Diana Ross changed the game permanently.

“Hit after hit after hit, on regular rotation to this day.

“A Supreme Titan may have left us but that legacy will never be surpassed.”

Berry Gordy, who founded Motown said to Variety: “”I was extremely shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of a major member of the Motown family.

“The Supremes were always known as the ‘sweethearts of Motown’.”

Motown records also paid tribute to the star, saying: “To a female trailblazer and forever Sweetheart of Motown, who brought many timeless records for generations to come – thank you.

“Your art and your legacy will forver live on in the Motown story.

“From our Motown family, rest in paradise.”

A celebration of the singer’s life is expected to take place later this year. Due to COVID-19 her funeral will be private.
