Candy Arts CIC to produce a documentary exploring Leicester’s black power movement

OPPORTUNITY: Free research and media production training will be taking place for anyone aged 16-25

IN 1990 Raddle Publications printed an important book titled Visions of Bena Balunda: A Documentary History of the Black Power Movement in Leicester 1970-72. This publication is very difficult to find and is not written in a particularly accessible format. There are no exhibits or films that represent this material, and there is therefore a lack of accessible information on the subject.

Candy Arts CIC has been funded by the heritage lottery fund to produce a documentary exploring Leicester’s black power movement between 1969 and 1990.  We want to document the experiences of key members of the community before they pass away, because If we do not collect, record and archive this heritage material, a lot will be lost.

Candy Arts would like to thank the Heritage Lottery Fund because we would be unable to undertake this project without their funding. This would mean that there would be no real opportunity for people to learn about the historical struggles of Leicester’s Black community and the relevance that it has to present day events. It would also result in the loss of a great deal of valuable heritage material.

Free research and media production training will be taking place for anyone aged 16-25 at the African Caribbean Centre in Leicester.

To quote Maya Angelou: “The more you know of your history, the more liberated you are.”
