THE STORY of Stephen Lawrence’s parents’ fight for justice will be turned into a new ITV drama.

The three-part series, titled Stephen, will be a sequel to the 1999 drama, The Murder of Stephen Lawrence.

It will chart the struggles that Doreen and Neville Lawrence encountered in their journey to secure justice for their murdered teenage son.

Stephen was killed in a racist attack at a bus stop in Eltham, south-east London on April 22 1993.

The initial investigation into his murder failed to convict his killers, even though their identities were known, and was derailed by institutional racism.

Baroness Lawrence, who recently consulted on a Coronation Street storyline about racism, told ITV News: “I am aware that the experience of police racism that we suffered as a family has been the experience of many in the UK.

“I hope that the film and the drama which has been commissioned will provide some insight into what we went through and give some hope to others that justice can eventually prevail.”

The new series will explore how the DCI Clive Driscoll, who worked closely with the Stephen’s parents, led an investigation that resulted in the conviction of two of the individuals that murdered Stephen, more than 18 years after the aspiring architect was killed.

Neville Lawrence said it was important that there would be a follow up drama to the first, especially given current events and conversations about race.

“That first film was important in telling Stephen’s story. It is important that the next part of the story is told, particularly at a time when, thanks to the Black Lives Matter (BLM) campaign, concerns around institutional racism are so prominent,” he told ITV News.

The original drama that told the story of Stephen’s murder will be broadcast again by ITV on 16 July. It will be followed by a live discussion, Stephen Lawrence: Has Britain Changed?
