NICOLA ADAMS has been named as one half of Strictly Come Dancing’s first ever same-sex dance couple.

The Olympic champion, who announced her retirement from boxing in November last year, has described the decision as “a big step for the show”.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast this morning, Adams said: “It’s really important it’s a big step for the show I think as well. It’s nice to see that we’re able to move on.”

The former boxer revealed that she asked the showrunners to pair her with a female dancer when they approached her to appear on it.

Adams, who describes herself as “dedicated on the dancefloor”, has said she “can’t dance at all” and that taking part would be a totally new challenge for her.

The 37-year-old’s dance partner has not yet been revealed.

“I also wanted to thank the BBC for supporting me and making me the first ever all female-pairing; and it’s amazing to be a part of the movement for change, diversity and breaking boundaries in the entertainment industry,” Adams said.

BBC broadcaster and TV presenter Clara Amfo has also been announced as one of this year’s Strictly Come Dancing contestants.

Amfo will join Adams, Good Morning Britain’s Ranvir Singh, actress Caroline Quentin, broadcaster and former American footballer Jason Bell, singer and actor Max George – and a number of other celebrity contestants who are yet to be revealed – for the 18th series of the show.

Amfo said: “As we know this year has been a real challenge and escapism through dancing is something I know we all enjoy, so to be taught by a pro and live a fantasy is something that I can’t wait to fully embrace.”

This year’s Strictly Come Dancing will return this autumn. The series will be shorter as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.
