BRITISH FILM and radio actress Adjoa Andoh plays Lady Danbury in Bridgerton, the new show from Shonda Rhimes’ company Shondaland, which hits our screens on Christmas day.

The period drama, showing on Netflix, is set during the Regency era in England and sees eight close-knit siblings of the powerful Bridgerton family attempt to find love.

Based on the best-selling book series of the same name by Julia Quinn the diverse cast has set tongues wagging about whether or not the show depicts the period in an accurate way.

Andoh however, believes anyone with an issue should get over it as this multi ethnic representation as far as she is concerned is probably closer to reality than anything previously seen.

She enthused: “I’ve got several things to say on this. It’s not a historical documentary, so lets say that from the get go.

“It is a joyful, supercharged version of the late 1700’s in the early 1800’s. So if you look at the Featherington‘s, a family in the film, and look at what they wear, they are psychedelic yellow, vivid orange and lime green, you aint seeing any of those colours in the Regency period. It’s supercharged.

“Equally in terms of the representation of people of colour, it is more accurate than any drama of that period that has no black people in it or not Asian people in it or no east Asian people in it.

“It’s much more accurate than that.

“This is a trading nation as well as a slaving nation so pre-slavery there were people coming here from all over the world and that’s never changed.

“So I would say that you are getting the zinger version of representation of people of colour in this show.

“Nevertheless, better the zinger version than the wholly inaccurate version.”
