Are you interested in sound? Well here’s a course for you regardless of your musical background

Free online composition and sound design workshops for ages 14-16

NOTATING THE World’, is a series of free online music workshops, aimed at ages 14-16, exploring the world of music notation, presented by Organ Scholar Jay Richardson.

The series will explore graphic and text scores, creative uses of staff notation, the sonification of numeric data sets, notating for the organ, aleatoric writing and interacting with performers.

Bringing in works from Nico Muhly to Pauline Oliveros and from Cathy Berberian to John Cage, the course takes a refreshing look at the art and science of musical notation for all those interested in sound, regardless of their musical background.

Sessions are streamed on YouTube every Wednesday at 3pm.

There will be an opportunity at the end of the course to write a five minute piece for solo organ and a selection of these pieces will be played at a recital when the Chapel reopens.

Speaking about the programme, Claire M Singer, Music Director of the Organ said, “Since the Chapel closed its doors we have been looking at the many ways we can bring elements of our organ programme Mixture online.

Union Chapel’s Organ Programme engages with the local community and beyond

“At this difficult time it’s important that we empower the next generation of creatives to stay engaged with their musical studies during lockdown.”
