WHETHER RELAXED or natural, black women are said to spend more on products than their non-black counterparts. As a result, the worth of the UK black haircare industry is estimated to be almost £90 million.

However, the products created and targeted at this lucrative market has been found to include harmful hormones disturbing chemicals.

In addition to this, the way we use hair care products has many people applying oils, and leave-in conditioners etc. which stay on our hair and scalp for long periods of time between washes making the affects of the products worse.

A recent US study by the Silent Spring Institute looked at 18 popular hair products including hot oil treatments, leave-in conditioners, root stimulators, hair lotions, and hair relaxers.

The study tested for the presence of 66 hormone disruptors, which are linked to disorders in reproduction, birth defects, cancer and more.

The study illustrated 45 hormone disruptors were detected in testing with each product containing between 3-40 of the harmful chemicals.

With so many US products popular in the UK, this study would be of great significance to many black hair care consumers here too.

Bidii interviewed author and hair coach Tola Okogwu on the issues and implications of using hair care products and advice on what we can do moving forward.
