JASON OKUNDAYE and Marc Thompson have created a digital archive documenting and honouring the social lives of black queer people in Britain.
The new project titled, Black & Gay, Back in the Day is a part of this month’s celebrations surrounding LGBTQ+ history.
The digital archive, which can be accessed on Instagram, is a visual depiction of life for many Black and queer people throughout 1950s Britain to the beginning of the 21st century.
Okundaye, a prolific writer and Thompson, a director at The Love Tank, both founded and run the social media page.
With almost 2,000 followers amassed since their post less than two weeks ago, their content is an intimate look into “Black queer life in Britain, as it was.”
Their images include legendary Black queer photographer, Ajamu X in his hometown of Huddersfield, and a meeting of members from the Black Gay Group in the early 80s.
The project also aims to share leaflets and other archived material to provide a “snapshot of what life was like for Black Britain’s LGBTQ+ communities, who are often invisibilised in discussions of Black British history.”
They also have released an open call for those that have experienced or know someone from the country’s Black queer community through the generations.
