A CAMPAIGN has been launched for Jadon Sancho to receive his own mural in his hometown of Kennington.

The 21-year-old England player, along with his teammates Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka, faced an onslaught of racist abuse on social media when all three footballers missed their penalties in last Sunday’s Euro 2020 final against Italy.

The proposed mural has been widely welcomed by local residents, councillors and Sancho’s own family.

The soon to be Manchester United footballer was born in Camberwell and raised in Kennington, has previously praised his South London roots.

“Growing up in Kennington has made me the man I am today. I owe a lot to South London for nurturing the way I play,” he said.

Sancho had great success at German team Borussia Dortmund, but local residents have told My London that the talented striker has wandered far from his beginnings and has since returned to his childhood home on the Guinness Trust Buildings Estate in Kennington to host barbecues and water fights for children.

In 2019, he also partnered with Nike to build a football ground for the Lambeth Tigers, a football team for six to 18-year-olds in Myatts Field Park.

With up to 13,000 signatures already achieved out of a target of 15,000, the two residents behind the growing campaign. Lambeth councillor, Danny Adilypour, has also joined the support for the mural.

Cllr Adilypour said: “In Lambeth we’re very proud of Jadon Sancho who grew up locally in Kennington. We’re also appalled by the racist abuse he’s suffered and stand in full solidarity with him. We’re currently looking to identify a suitable location to mark his achievements and our support for him.”
