Be a bigger part of your community; build the police forces of the future

IF YOU’RE the kind of person who cares about their community, this role is perfect for you. We’re looking for new people to join our team of assessors, at the College of Policing and within police forces across England and Wales. Tasked with assessing the suitability of new police recruits, you’ll take candidates through a range of exercises that test their skills and aptitude. With an increased demand for police officers during these critical times, your role as an assessor will play an even bigger part in helping our police services tackle crime and keeping communities safe.

Become an assessor

Join as an assessor and you’ll receive a set daily rate, as well as full, paid training on how to best support police officers through the assessment process. During training, you’ll also learn about the skills that all candidates must have in order to become police officers.

We cannot guarantee a minimum number of days you’ll work for, but as an assessor we’ll ask you to offer 30 days a year, usually 5 days at a time. You could do more if you want to. You’ll need a security check but we’ll pay for this, and guide you through the process.

Among your responsibilities, you’ll objectively assess and evaluate candidate performance against a set of competency and value areas. Importantly, you’ll offer the support that candidates need to feel at ease, so they can perform to the best of their ability.

Who can join?

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, cultures and experiences. To tackle today’s complex policing challenges, it’s important for us to have a diverse workforce – as diverse as the communities our police officers serve.

To join our delivery team as an assessor, you’ll need a good understanding of the English language, both spoken and written – with a Functional Skills Level 2 in English (or an equivalent qualification in English such as a GCSE Grade C). Strong interpersonal skills are also essential, plus the ability to listen and respond in a friendly and supportive manner. The willingness to learn and develop where necessary is also a must.
