Liberia’s president George Weah releases music track about Covid-19

The popular politician and former AC Milan star is hoping his musical efforts can help to raise awareness among his fellow citizens about the dangers of the disease

NEW TRACK: Liberia's president George Weah is using music to spread public health messages about Covid-19

LIBERIA’S PRESIDENT George Weah has released a Covid-19 awareness song in a bid to encourage Liberians to take the necessary actions to protect themselves from the disease.

According to a government spokesperson Weah is hoping that his song, Let Us Stand Together and Fight Coronavirus, will not only appeal to music lovers in the West African nation of 4.5 million, but will help ensure that it does not spread any further than the three cases already confirmed in the capital Monrovia.

Preventive measures

On the track, Weah explains how the virus is transmitted and calls on Liberians to take the necessary preventive measures announced by health officials and experts to defeat the disease.

PARTNERSHIP: Weah, seen here in action for former club AC Milan, produced the track with local musicians in Liberia

The president partnered with both gospel musicians and local secular singers to produce the anti-coronavirus song.

Weah sings: “It could be your mama, it could be your papa, brother and sisters. Let’s stand together to fight this dirty disease now. What kinds of world we live in full of uncertainty, no security everything but everything is possible.”

Presidential Press Secretary Isaac Solo Kelgbeh said: “The President has his own studio that he built to empower Liberian artists. He went to the studio…..and talked to the engineers and partners with several local musicians. He didn’t take a dime from the government’s coffers to do that song.”

Weah is believed to be the first head of state to produce a song to educate people about the danger and preventive measures of Covid-19.

Public health emergency

Liberia has declared a state of public health emergency following the confirmation of a third case of the coronavirus.

The government has already implemented several measures in two regions within the country, including a ban on public gatherings; school and houses of worship closures as well as suspension of flights in order to limit the spread of the disease.

Health Minister Dr. Wilhelmina Jallah said the new measures also limit the number of people allowed attend events such as marriages and funerals.

The government has threatened to arrest and prosecute anyone, including government officials, who violate the public safety measures.
