Moissanite vs. Diamond: Why You Should Choose Moissanite over Diamonds

YOU HAVE seen the advertisements for ‘ice’ jewellery, whether it is rings or necklaces with beautiful diamond pieces that are set in platinum. They are everywhere– radio, television, magazines and websites such as MoissaniteCo… you name it! However, if you ask yourself “should I buy Moissanite instead of diamonds?” The answer is probably yes.

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, right? Well, not really the way it is the way it used to be. The truth of the matter is that Moissanite stones are more brilliant and durable than diamonds. Most importantly, they have very similar make-up! So, why spend all that extra money on “ice” when you can get a better deal with Moissanite? This article will review everything to know about the differences between Moissanite and diamonds.

Understanding Moissanite vs. Diamonds

Here is a history lesson before we jump into discussing “honest to goodness facts” regarding Moissanite. You need to have a full understanding of where they come from to appreciate how far they have come.

If you were not already aware, a French chemist and Nobel Prize winner named Dr Henri Moissan first discovered Moissanite in 1893. He discovered minute quantities of the crystals in an Arizona meteor crater. Therefore, we can create these incredible gems and avail them to those who value beauty as much as we do.

Why pick Moissanite over diamonds?

Even with the competition in the market, Moissanite is still preserved and cherished because of what they offer. These stones have some very impressive properties making them ideal for jewellery use:

  1. The thermal conductivity

The thermal conductivity of Moissanite is 25% greater than diamonds (3.42 vs 2.86). -It has double the fire dispersion of diamonds (0.104 vs 0.044). -It has 16% greater lustre than diamond (20.4 vs 18).

  • Moissanite Fire and Brilliance

On top of all that, moissanite is more brilliant than diamonds, which means it can return more light to your eyes! You will never see two stones that are identical because the chemical composition is not identical.

Instead, nature mixes up the various elements in different ways when creating Moissanite crystals inside the Earth. This is what makes it special and rare! Perhaps, naturally occurring Moissanite gems are simply elusive. After all, haven’t people been mining diamonds for thousands of years? Not necessarily so.

  • Moissanites are lab-grown!

If you care about the environment, you should love Moissanite. This is because lab-grown. However, original Moissanite crystals form when cosmic debris collides with Earth. It turns out that those tiny amounts of Silicon carbide are scattered throughout the cosmos. Cosmic collisions produce a variety of impact events, from relatively gentle to cataclysmic explosions.

Researchers studied the crystals and found them to be composed of carbon (SiC) and silicon (Si), just like diamonds on Earth. However, since these crystals did not come from our planet, scientists called them Moissanite after their discoverer’s name, Dr Ferdinand Henri. With these known compositions, it became possible to create Moissanite in the lab.

  • Durability for jewellery

After growing Moissanite for many years, manufacturers have refined it. Therefore, manufacturers produce quality moissanite that is hard enough for use in jewellery products. On the Mohs scale, Moissanite has a score of 9.25, which is better than that of diamond making it hard to scratch.  In that case, it is a long-lasting option for jewellery products.

  • Affordability

With lab-grown solutions, Moissanite is more affordable than diamonds. Most importantly, they offer great quality and experience just like diamonds. Therefore, you will get value for a cheap price. Why go for expensive gems while Moissanite can get you what you want?

The increased supply of Moissanite in the market has led to a decrease in the price of allied products. Diamond remains expensive because you can only get it through mining.

Buy Moissanite Jewelry and Stones

In the jewelry market, Moissanite is a good replacement for diamonds. It has similar physical, optical and chemical properties to diamonds. However, the price is only 1/10 to 1/20 of diamonds. Moissanite which has similar look to diamond had been used in jewelry manufacture for more than 100 years. Therefore, it will give you value for money and a great experience just like diamonds.

I am curious where do you get this number and what is the unit? Any references? As I am looking for the data. Thank you.
