NAOMI CAMPBELL, Thandie Newton and other famous figures are calling on airlines not to go ahead with a planned deportation flight to Jamaica.
The flight is widely believed to be scheduled for December 2nd.
Over 90 well-known Black Britons have signed a letter addressed to the CEO’s of TUI UK and Ireland, Titan Airways, Hi Fly and others.
They suggest they have reason to believe the companies have previously worked with the UK government to facilitate deportation flights.
They urge the airlines not to operate this scheduled flight, and have asked that future deportation flights to Commonwealth countries do not go ahead.
They outlined concerns that were raised by the Equality and Human Rights Commission. In a report published this week, they claim that the Government’s ‘hostile environment’ policies breach equality laws.
They also mention the resignation of senior Black civil servant Alexandra Ankrah, who claimed that the scheme was not fit for purpose.
The letter also highlights that many of those scheduled to be on the deportation flight have resided in the UK since childhood.
Letter signatories include Booker Prize winning Bernardine Evaristo, historian David Olusoga, Leroy Logan, former Metropolitan Police superintendent and Naomie Harris.
Speaking to the PA news agency, the Home Office has said that people on the flight “include convicted murderers and rapists.”
However, they would not comment on individual cases.
A spokesperson added: “We make no apology for seeking to remove dangerous foreign criminals to keep the public safe.
“Each week we remove foreign criminals from the UK to different countries who have no right to be here, this flight is no different.”
