OLADEJI ADEYEMI Omishore, who fell to his death from Chelsea Bridge after being tasered by police, was not holding a screwdriver, the police investigation has admitted.

There were widespread media reports, based on a police briefing, that the 41-year-old was wielding a screwdriver when he was tasered three times on 11 June.

The false information dampened outrage after phone camera footage of the incident was broadcast on social media.

Now, over a week later, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has revealed that Omishore was only carrying a “plastic and metal firelighter” when he was approached by two officers on Chelsea Bridge.

A still from the phone footage of the incident

IOPC Regional Director Sal Naseem said: “Our thoughts remain with Mr Omishore’s family and all of those affected by his death. We continue to liaise with his family and to keep them updated on the progress of our independent investigation.

“Our investigators continue to gather and analyse key evidence, including footage recorded at the scene and initial accounts from officers and members of the public. We would urge anyone else who may have witnessed or recorded any part of the incident, either on the bridge or after Mr Omishore entered the river, to get in touch with us without delay. It is important we understand all of the circumstances surrounding his death.”

Anyone with information can contact the IOPC on 0300 3035579 or email  [email protected]  as soon as possible.

He was acting in a threatening manner, the police were told it was a screwdriver. They did the right thing, he took his own life by jumping into the river.

        Why doesn’t Patricia
Hill stand there doing nothing and I will repeatedly tazer her.
Is she deaf or can she not read? The guy did not have an offensive weapon.
What is acting in a manner in which the use of a weapon which can potentially kill be used?
The officers safety was not in question.

          Patrica,

I hope and pray you or none off your loved ones fall victim to a tazar attack. Particularly if you have a bad heart or suffer from fits. These tazar guns are suppose to be deployed as a last resort. Two police officers could have done better in this situation from what I’ve seen from the footage.

Isn’t it time we admitted that policing is failing us? It fails to protect us & it fails to prevent crimes. Bigger weapons make the police feel even more powerful & free to do as they please – more cops doesn’t mean less crime, it means more deaths of vulnerable people.

Sincerest condolences to the family of this poor man. Police who kill and then lie about their victims should be punished – not just the street cops, but their media people, lawyers and commanders. Police often lie about people they kill.

The police need serious reviewing. The amount of black peoples dying in their “care” is absolutely disgraceful. If white bodies were piling up like this, we would be having a different conversation. Systemic racism and the metropolitan police, go together hand in hand.

The Police High Command always lie and distribute false information to protect the unlawful behaviour of their Police Constables.

What hurt most is the awful fact that the Police Constable who needlessly tasered this African-heritage man three times, was also of West African heritage.

In great pain this man trying to escape the brutal Police tasering jump of the fence into the river and died.

Now All African-heritage people have to worry and fear African-heritage Police Constables; as they are just as savage and brutal as their colleagues: and will quickly use excessive force, when deadly force is not required against African-heritage men; women and youth.
