AN ELDERLY Canadian couple has been found dead in their home in St. Thomas, Jamaica.
The two victims have been identified as 81-year-old Melbourne Flake and his 70-year-old wife Etta Flake, both from Winnipeg.
According to Toronto City News, the couple was found inside their home in Retreat, St. Thomas on Tuesday morning (Jan 9) with their hands and feet bound.
In a statement, Global Affairs Canada spokesperson Brendan Sutton said consular officials are in contact with local authorities to gather more information.
“We offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the Canadian citizens who have been murdered in Jamaica,” he said. “To protect the privacy of the individuals concerned, further details on this case cannot be released.”
The deceased couple’s daughter Debbie Olmert said to CBC News: “It was just terrible, that’s all I know. I thought that I was in a dream.”
“I thought that this couldn’t possibly be what I was hearing, that it was a bad, bad joke. That I would be saying, ‘OK, you know what? That’s not funny.”
“But I realiseed at some point when I had several people starting to call me, and I had another person from Jamaica call me and say, ‘I’m sorry Debbie,’ I thought, ‘Oh, OK, this is not a fantasy. This is real.’
No arrests have been made and no motive has been released.
