NIGERIA HAS banned the use of foreign models and voice-over artists in advertisements produced in the country.
In a statement released to the media the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) said: “All advertisements, advertising, and marketing communications materials targeted or exposed on the Nigerian advertising space are to use only Nigerian models and voice-over artists. Advertisers, advertisement agencies, media houses, advertising community and the general public are hereby enjoined to take note.”
The ban will take effect from October 1.
According to ARCON, the new law is in line with the Federal Government’s aim of nurturing homegrown talent and fostering conomic expansion in Nigeria’s advertising sector, creating more employment for young Nigerians and helping conserve scarce foreign exchange.
In a further statement Olalekan Fadolapo, Director General of ARCON, said that current campaigns and advertising that featured non-native models and voice actors would be allowed to run their full terms.
However, he added that the Advertising Standards Panel of ARCON would not approve future requests to continue broadcasting similar ads.
According to local media reports Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari recently approved a bill granting ARCON the responsibility of promoting the talents of the country’s media professionals in the advertising, marketing, and communication services fields.

Patriotic Nationalism is the reason for the rise and economic; military, and cultural dominance of Western Caucasian Europe.
African Patriotic Nationalism is desperately required if Nigeria; and the nations of continental of Africa, are to throw-off the trading injustices that prevents and deters African manufacturing.
I don’t understand Chaka’s post. Despite his claim if Western countries had any sort of ‘patriotic nationalism’, then overrepresentation of people of African and non-European descent in advertising and sports would not be allowed or occurring as it has been for decades.
Non-whites are overrepresented though, just look at the England football team and advertising in the UK, USA, Germany, France, etc.
